Unless you go inside into the room with the video screens showing races from various tracks around the country, you place your bets and claim your winnings at a single window at a small wooden shack next to the metal seating structure.Īlthough there is an announcer for the video feed of the Monticello races that is sent to betting parlors elsewhere, if you are sitting outside and watching the races in person, there isn't even a speaker for you to hear that announcer. No fresh food of any kind was available for purchase, so we returned to our car to retrieve a few snacks from our trunk. And the owners liked to hang out near the seating structure puffing on smelly stogies and polluting the air fortunately, this subsided by the second race. But the biggest surprise is that including the two of us, only about 30 people were there to watch the races, and that included a few owners of the horses.

The seating was in an open metal frame/canvas roof structure out in front of the grandstand that has about 80 seats. I don't know if it was just when we visited, but all the doors were chained shut. The surprise started when we entered and found that the large enclosed grandstand has also been closed.

We were astonished at what we found.įirst, we knew that the casino had been permanently closed. This was our first visit and it was a beautiful sunny Monday in August.
